As 2009 draws to a close, this becomes one of the busiest periods of the year for services, new school leavers start to trial and visit services, end of year excursion planning and future planning for 2010 staffing and programmes are in full swing.

Of significance over the last few weeks has been the continued expansion of our independent living and respite services, so much so that each centre now manages and offers an overnight /medium term accomodation option  suitable for either emergency or planned respite as well as long term planning for independent living.

This is a natural progression for the service and clients and allows us to move to our goal of operating the centres on a 7 day / 24hr basis.  This allows us to provide and expand the day activities - with extended hours as well as weekend and evening support options where required.

I have also been meeting with a range of parents and clients from the centres seeking feedback in regard to service options, strategies and operations.  I would like to thank the people and staff who have participated in this process.  In 2010 we will see a number of staff changes and new faces, most of these staff have already commenced in order that there is a smooth transition between staff leaving to new roles and clients have the opportunity to develop new working relationships in a gradual manner.

One of the new approaches to day service programmes will also include the ability for clients to have greater involvement in choosing OPTIONS on a day to day basis to brng greater flexibility and choice to programmes, this will mean community access and popular choices such as cooking classes, art and craft, gardening and special projects ie the coffee /gift shop, garden gurus and horse care and riding will be expanded.

Post School Activity Programmes for 2010 will end on 18th December and return on 4th January.  Alternative programmes may be available during this period if required. Please do not hesitate to contact your staff to discuss any holiday arrangements,

In 2010 we will be welcoming new directors to the organisation who will continue to work with clients and families to provide a focused responsive service.

REGARDS

Natalie Hennessy
